Apply for Norway passport

Here’s how to apply for a Norwegian passport:

Eligibility:

The most important factor is that you must be a Norwegian citizen to get a Norwegian passport.

Applying in Norway:

If you are currently in Norway and a Norwegian citizen, you can apply for a passport in one of two ways:

  1. At the Police Station: This is the most common method.

    • Book an Appointment: You can book an appointment online through the Norwegian Police website
    • Prepare Required Documents: These typically include:
      • Valid Norwegian National Identity Number (personnummer)
      • Current valid passport (if applicable)
      • Proof of identity (driver’s license, bank card, etc.)
      • Two passport photos meeting specifications ([invalid URL removed])
      • Fee for the passport (cost depends on validity period and express service options)
    • Attend Your Appointment: Present your documents, have your photo taken (if needed), and pay the fee.
    • Collect Your Passport: Processing typically takes a few weeks. You’ll be notified when your passport is ready for collection at the police station.
  2. Electronically (limited situations): In some cases, you may be eligible to renew your passport electronically if it meets certain criteria (within 10 years of issuance, no changes to appearance, etc.). Check the Norwegian Police website for details

Applying Outside Norway:

If you are a Norwegian citizen living outside Norway, you can apply for a passport at your nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate.

  1. Contact the Embassy or Consulate: Find your nearest location through the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Order Passport
  2. Schedule an Appointment: Most embassies recommend scheduling an appointment in advance.
  3. Prepare Required Documents: These will be similar to what’s required in Norway but may vary slightly depending on the embassy/consulate. Always confirm exact requirements beforehand. They typically include:
    • Completed application form (often available online or at the embassy)
    • Proof of Norwegian citizenship (birth certificate, passport)
    • Proof of residency in your current country
    • Two recent passport-sized photographs meeting embassy specifications
    • Fee for the passport (fees may vary depending on location and chosen processing speed)
