Apply for a Malaysian passport

There are two main ways to apply for a Malaysian International Passport:

  1. At an Immigration Office in Malaysia: This is the option if you are currently in Malaysia. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • Visit the Immigration Office: Find your nearest Immigration Office at
  • Prepare the Required Documents: These typically include:
    • MyKad (Malaysian Identification Card) or MyKid (child’s ID card)
    • Existing passport (if applicable)
    • Birth certificate (for first-time applicants or those without MyKad/MyKid)
    • Two passport-sized photographs (規格照片 guīgé zhàopiàn) that meet official specifications
    • Payment for the passport fee (the fee can vary depending on the validity period of the passport)
  • Complete the Application Form: You can obtain the application form (Borang IM42) at the Immigration Office or download it beforehand from the Immigration Department website
  1. At a Malaysian Representative Office Abroad: This is the option if you are outside of Malaysia. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • Contact the Nearest Malaysian Representative Office: Embassies and High Commissions act as Malaysian Representative Offices abroad. Find the contact details for your nearest office through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website
  • Schedule an Appointment: Many embassies recommend scheduling an appointment in advance to apply for a passport.
  • Prepare the Required Documents: These will be similar to what’s required in Malaysia but may vary slightly depending on the embassy/high commission. It’s always best to confirm the exact requirements beforehand. They typically include:
    • A completed application form (may be available online or at the embassy)
    • Proof of Malaysian citizenship (birth certificate, MyKad/MyKid)
    • Proof of residency in the country you’re located
    • Two passport-sized photographs meeting embassy specifications
    • Payment for the passport fee (fees may vary depending on location and chosen processing speed)
