Apply for a French id card

In France, the ID card is called a “Carte Nationale d’Identité” (National Identity Card). Here’s how to apply for one:


  • You must be a French citizen or hold a valid residency permit in France.

Applying Within France:

  1. Choose Your Application Method: You can apply for a French National Identity Card in two main ways:

    • In Person: This is the most common method.
    • Pre-application Online (recommended): While finalizing the application requires an in-person visit, pre-applying online can significantly reduce processing time.
  2. Pre-application Online (Recommended):
